Cats and rats and vampire bats

Do you feel a little dizzy?
.
Are you feeling a bit out of Flux?
.
Perhaps it’s just a strange wind blowing through the shrubbery you walk through.
.
The woodland path is a bit overgrown, but …
.
.
.

.
…there is a full moon dancing in the sky tonight. Follow the bats. You can see the house off the distance. It’s not a far walk and the host’s ghost will escort you. Welcome Fanciful Partygoers!
.
.
.

Jack greets you at the door Music plays behind him from inside the house.
.
“Come in, come in. The Black Cat Ball has just begun.”
.
.
The festive foyer welcomes you. Punkins, twining ivy, the smell of cinnamon. A handmade banner is hung by the staircase with care. There is a glow to the room, warm and friendly. Even the bat.

Oh–don’t be frightened by Moonstruck. The only thing he bites is chocolate.

Did you forget your costume? Don’t worry. There is no dress code here, so relax and enjoy. There is plenty of fun for everyone. Gallops and Boo have just finished the last game of skull chess. Come into the the other room where the band is playing.

.
The upbeat music starts your feet tapping. Ah, there you are, dancing to the rockin’ music. And you thought you had two left feet? Nonsense. The Guys jump in to match your energy. Dancing the night away.
.
.
*Whew* Perhaps it’s time for a break? Refreshments are right over here.

.
Our hosts have outdone themselves tonight. The main appetizer is peanut blooder crackers. What a treat! Yum. They make the jam by paw, you know, with fresh, organic ingredients. Nothing but the best for their crowd.
.
.
So many guests have come from out of town for the big event. Dotters and his trainee arrived from Pennsylvania.

Purrz the Big City Kitty flew in from Chicago. There may be a large attendance of felines, but there’s no fighting like cats and dogs.
In fact, these cats would never, ever think of eating a real fish. Some of their best friends swim in the water. Still, there is a bit of whimsy in the air, so Trix baked chocolate fish cookies. They would not want to insult their funny, finny guests. Besides, their fish friends like chocolate, too.
.

.
.
And here is our hosts’ specialty: choclocat biscotti and their fine aged mocha brew-ha-ha. Best get your hands on a glass of it now. Scaredy Cat is eyeing a second (or third?) helping.
.
.

.
Do you hear that? The music has stopped. Oh, let’s hurry. Boo, Cruiser, Turtle…this is no time to be pokey. The hosts are in the study about to tell a ghost story.
.
.
.

Look, there’s Sneaky Cat, Scaredy Cat, Trix and Onyx. Aren’t they beautiful cats? No bad luck if they cross your path.

Trix addresses the crowd. “Welcome, everyone, to our Halloween Black Cat Ball. We are so glad that you could attend.” purrrrrrrrrr. “We trust that you are enjoying the food and will party your whiskers off. Right now, curl up for a moment and settle in for one of our favorite ghost stories….”
.
.
.
.
It was Halloween Eve and three ghosts were laughing. Their trick or treat bags overflowed with a good stash of candy and chocolate. They were on their way home talking about the sucessful night when they met a rat.

.
The ghosts dropped their bags and gasped.

.
.
.
.
“Don’t be afraid,” said the rat. “My name is Ike and I dropped my bag of candy on the street back there. Would you be willing to share some of your candy with me?”
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
“No,” they said.
“Shoo!” “Boo!”
.
.
.
.
The rat walked away, head drooping.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The three ghosts continued down the street, whispering about the strange rat. One ghost thought he saw a piece of candy along the side of the road. He reached down to add it to his stash when he tripped. He stumbled and tumbled and bumbled until he plopped at the bottom of a hill, scattering his trick or treat candy everywhere.

.
.
“Help.”
.

.
.
His two friends looked down, but it was dark and hard to see him. They didn’t want to risk tumbling down the ditch and being stuck, too.
“How will we get him out of there?” they asked each other.

There was a scuffling behind the ghosts. It was Ike, the rat they had passed earlier.

“What happened?” he said. “I heard a cry for help.”
.
“You did?” asked one of the ghosts, stunned. “How did you know we were in trouble?”

“Rats have very good hearing and sense of smell.” He threw his shoulders back just a little as he looked around. “Perhaps I can help.”
Ike dug his claws into the ground to steady himself and then he lowered his tail. The ghost at the bottom grabbed it and Ike pulled him up.

“Thank you,” said the ghost, brushing dirt off. “How did you know I fell?”

“I have very good hearing and I wanted to make sure no one was hurt. I also knew it was you because….” Ike paused and blushed. “…I smelled the chocolate.”

The three ghosts looked down the hill. They couldn’t see it, but they knew all the candy was scattered on the grass. The third ghost drooped his shoulders.

“We’ll share our candy with you,” his two friends said. The ghost looked at them and smiled. “Thanks, but only if you share with Ike, too.
.
He looked directly at Ike the rat. “We shooed you away, but you came back to help me.”

“Of course,” said Ike.

“Not ‘of course.’ I may not have done that.” The ghost bowed his head. “Well, we have plenty to share.”

“Sure. We even have hot chocolate at home,” they said. Ike smiled. “Let’s go,” the ghosts said. The four of them walked off together.
.
.
.
.
The cats wrapped up their tail…er, tale.

“We love a happy ending,” Sneaky and Scaredy said together.
We have some special guests here tonight, but let’s remember that everyone is special.”

.
.
“There’s still plenty of chocolate, so let’s enjoy.”
.
.
.
.
.
.
Before everyone left the room, a rat came up to the hosts. “Are there more stories to tell?” he asked.

“Oh, yes,” answered Trix. “Absolutely.”
