THON: 24 for 46 for 24 and Paterno

January 24.
It is 24 days ’til THON.
Twenty four days until students stay awake and on their feet for 46 hours to raise money to provide 24-hour care to children
fighting cancer at the Hershey Medical Center.

Penn State’s Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world.  Student-run–did you catch that?  Only college students plan, organize and execute this event.  THON donates $0.96 of every dollar raised to The Four Diamonds Fund. I danced as an undergrad in 1991. This picture is from about Hour 42, I would imagine.  I don’t know, as dancers are not allowed to wear watches.

Joe Paterno made a surprise visit to the dancers during THON 2009.  It’s a great speech. He believed in the charity and he supported the students.

I believe in this enough that I danced again in 2010.  This picture is definitely from Hour 43 out of 46, at the time our Moralers left us. Shhhhhh…my dance partner wore a watch this year.

The Paterno family has asked that in lieu of flowers or gifts that donations be made to the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania, a charity the Paterno family supported for more than 20 years, or to THON.   Each site has directions on how to donate in memory of JoePa.
